winter inspiration

as we finally leave those freezing cold temperatures from the polar vortex behind us, here's a little wintertime inspiration from pinterest.

photographer spotlight: cindy sherman

I've been a fan of Cindy Sherman's photography since my first college photography class. As an introverted person, her ability to create her own world alone in her apartment really spoke to me. Sherman became interested in photography while she was in college in Buffalo, NY (after failing her first course) and, since then, she has pioneered in field that didn't not have many women in it and also one that many people felt was not a true art form. She said, when asked if she thinks it's crazy that her photographs sell for over 1 million dollars in an interview with the guardian, "Totally. I totally deserve this, I thought. People think because it's photography it's not worth as much, and because it's a woman artist, you're still not getting as much – there's still definitely that happening. I'm still really competitive when it comes to, I guess, the male painters and male artists. I still think that's really unfair."

To me, her photographs, especially her Untitled Film Stills series (my personal favorite, always evoked a sense of mystery and curiosity. They leave the viewer wondering what the context could be and what the subjects could be thinking. They certainly leave the viewer thinking and that, no matter what the medium, is a work of art

Sorry about how image heavy this is. I just really love her work and it was hard to pick which photos to share. All images are from MoMA. They have a great collection. I definitely recommend checking it out.

The Loved One

When I came across The Loved One's winter lookbook, Winter Lights, I immediately wanted to take a trip up north to a forest somewhere (well maybe after this polar vortex passes and when I won't freeze to death). It was shot by Agnes Thor, who's etherial photos perfectly capture The Loved One's soft aesthetic. Hannah Metz styled the shoot in cozy looks from their collection and it really complement's the lightness of the photos. The landscape makes me long for even slightly warmer temperatures when you can actually go outside for more than 15 minutes.
